Scoping to People, Not Devices: Modern Jamf Pro Strategies for People-Centric Management
Jamf Pro was built for devices, not people, and despite recent improvements, that legacy still shows. Want to scope a policy to an Entra ID security group? Apply a configuration only to Okta users in the “Marketing” group? Prepare for some creative problem-solving. This session cuts through the hype to deliver practical strategies we’ve validated in real-world deployments. We’ll start by breaking down why user-centric scoping remains challenging in Jamf Pro, then dive into four actionable approaches: 1. Enrollment customization, SSO integration: Use Jamf’s Enrollment Customization and SSO integrations to pull user identity and group info from Entra or Okta during device setup, so you can tie devices to users right from the start, without LDAP. 2. Smart Group sorcery: Combine device enrollment methods with user attributes (like usernames or emails from your IdP) to create “pseudo-user” groups that stay in sync. 3. Extension attribute magic: Use scripts or extension attributes to collect and report user identity or group membership from the device, then leverage that info in Smart Groups for targeting. 4. API-driven nuclear option: Use scripts and the Jamf API to pull group memberships directly from your IdP and inject them into Jamf Pro scopes—no LDAP required. You’ll see demos of each method, complete with gotchas like “Why isn’t my user’s group updating?” and “How do I handle shared devices?” We’ll compare performance impacts, maintenance overhead and reliability across approaches—because let’s face it, nobody wants to explain to their CIO why the new “user-centric” workflow broke onboarding. By the end, you’ll know exactly which method(s) to implement based on your org’s size, IdP setup and tolerance for complexity. Bonus: We’ll share our pre-built scripts for syncing Entra/Okta groups to Jamf Smart Groups, because life’s too short to reinvent the wheel.

Think Like a Journalist: Strategies for End-User Notifications
As macOS systems gain more traction in the enterprise, managed OS and third-party updates become a priority due to regulatory and other compliance concerns. At the same time, end users are confronted with more privacy and security controls with on-screen notifications or other communication elements that add distraction and confusion, which often water down any urgent messages being sent from IT. There’s no silver bullet or perfect way to communicate, but in this session, we will present things to think about to minimize confusion and improve compliance, along with a case study of what has worked and hasn’t worked in our organization. This will be a thought-provoking session with a call to action for other Mac admins to structure and provide clear user notifications.
